During the early days of my Internet experience, I tried as many methods of getting traffic to my blog as people would throw at me and every one was just as important and the killer plan to make my way. Did it work? not one single method was the key to succes but it was more a mixture and I was definately a new kid on the block. You need to think of traffic building like creating the most fabulous cake in the whole world. You need just the right amount of many components to make it awsomely tasty. So here are a few tips for you to use so you can be on your way.

Pay-Per-Click
If you have a spare bit of money, you can get quick traffic by signing up with google adwords or a similar type product. You could start seeing visitors to your sight in about 5 minutes but be sure to set your boundaires and make sure your make a return on your investment or you could just throw the money at me :)

Linking
Links are important but not as much as you might think. Try to get a few, Set a goal of 1 inbound link a day whilst your producing your content. Do not over do it as it will look un-natural and you will be penalised in the search engines.

Search Engine Optimization
Take a good look at your header tags, your bolds, your alt's in the img tag.
Try and place your keywords near the top and bottom of each page.

OK so you have your blog all up and running, your posting regularly (well more than I am but hey) and the information your describing to the world id useful information that your readers would benefit from and enjoy (sometimes:)). You have set up google analytics and you check it every hour on the hour and for some reason days go by, you keep building, but no one comes. That line from the kevin costner film "fields of dreams" the whispering voice keeps saying "if you build it they will come" is not exactly rinnging true now is it. So what are you going to do about it?

1. Get your family, friend and everyone in your social loop to subscribe to your RSS
2. Post your feed to RSS directories
3. Read and comment on other blogs
4. Always ping every post
5. Submit your blog to traditional search engines, adding web master tools from google has the same effect
6. Submit your blog to as many blog directories as you can.
7. Add a link to your blog or site in your email signature. Then when you send your mails people will get the address
8. Put a link to your blog or website on every page of your website or blog.
9. Send out tweets from twitter telling people you have updated your page.
10. Write your URL on as many pieces of documentation you publish
11. Always mention your URL in conversations
12. Make sure your RSS feed is working and you can also publish Atom feeds
13. Keep posting, the search engines love a frequently updated blog
14. Try to use commentluv or discus for commenting
15. Publish articles in ezine, squidoo etc.
16. Always try to get at least one link inbound per pay

Forums and blog commenting

It is very time consuming but there are tools that can do it for you. Most of these tools are very expensive and some actually require a subscription. My advice here is to carefully select your blogs and forums to comment on. Always search for them in google then you know they are spidered regularly.

Have very good comments, with good anchor text on a highly visited site will give you great link juice but will also be a valuable source of income.

The downside to linking in this way is if you just blast away anywhere you can you will not see an increase in targeted visitors therfore no sales :(

Always link your posts

If you have installed analytics on your site or blog then you must link your posts or pages correctly. I found that when I started to get traffic my bounce rate* was way to high. So i started linking to other informative articles in my blog. Take a look here and you will see at the end of each post i link to 3 other articles.

The theory behind this is, you work so hard trying to get visitors to your blog you need to give them every chance to click an advertisement. So if you get one visitor on one page then the chances of getting a click are doubled if they look at the next page.

This saw my bounce rate drop to about 50% so in essence i was actually getting 1.5 visitors for each 1 visitor.

You can achieve the linking strategy in many ways, however there are 3 common ways.

1) Have a really nice menu on the left, right or top that is always visible at the start and end of each post.

2) Manually link to other articles / posts at the end of each page.

3) Edit the template or theme to automatically put the links to you highest converting posts.

If you look at my mortgage blog you will see I am experimenting with option 3 at the moment.

Bounce Rate: the amount of visitors to your site that view one page and then leave.

First tip and I will keep this short and sweet. Ezine is a high page ranked article engine. I have posted 2 articles to them and had 100 hits back plus increasing my backlinks to help with organic growth.
